An advertising gimmick
I never quite know where inspiration to write might strike, but the other day it was in the shower. I wonder who in the heck decided it was a good idea for women to shave their legs.
Here's what I am confident of... this trend was not invented by a 43 year old, mostly blind female. Also, it was not a perfectionist's idea. And, it seems unlikely females were consulted in the usefulness of this practice.
So, as it often does my curiosity drove me to the interweb to research leg shaving. Wikipedia did not disappoint, turns out other 43 year old blind women must also be curious about why we play this game.
Here's what I learned.
This game of shaving legs just turn hundred years old, being born around the 1920s. Happy birthday, stupid idea! It was an advertising gimmick promoted by three industries - razor companies (Gillette, you'd be dead to me if you weren't so darn good at your job), the fashion industry, and magazines.
Turns out that in the beginning women resisted the idea of shaving because they thought it was unnecessary. We were smart back then. But as with many things in life, fake news convinced our ancestral sisters that smooth legs were better legs and we followed like lemmings.
So because an advertisement told us it was a good idea, women across this great country decided to collectively start our days with calisthenics in a wet tub trying to get the smoothest legs possible. We then committed to spending another five minutes of our mornings trying to get the tiny hairs that think bathtub scum is better than superglue cleaned up so that others do not question the welfare of Bigfoot when they go to take their showers. And we conceded that we were willing to be annoyed on a regular basis by the fact that a swath of hair got missed on the lower back quadrant of our leg when go to get dressed.
Women, I think it's time to devolve. Let's ignore the bad ideas of men from the turn of the century and just live with the hair God gave us on our legs. It will make our lives so much easier. Men, if you like smooth legs - I have a calisthenics routine for you...
